ROSE

SHORTLAND

I am a London-based multi-disciplinary designer recently graduated with a BA in design from Goldsmiths, University of London. Born in the Bay Area of California to British and British-Chinese parents, my multicultural background greatly influences my creative perspective. I am particularly interested in how culture intersects with design, a topic I’ve been exploring over the last couple years.

With a background in fine art and drawing, my artistic aptitude often influences my design process. At Goldsmiths, I received a non-traditional, multidisciplinary design education. This encouraged me to think critically about how design sits within a broader context, therefore pursuing briefs with a more holistic approach. I was also encouraged to work across various design mediums, pushing me to deeply value making as an important step in my design process.

I am particularly interested in collaborating across artistic disciplines, integrating design with film, music, and live experiences. Since completing a three-month placement with set and costume designer Stewart J. Charlesworth last summer, I have continued to assist him with various freelance work, gaining hands-on experience within theatre production design.

Drawing on the lived experiences of others has become an important part of my design practice. I find a lot of inspiration in sharing stories, experiences, and memories with one another. These interactions challenge my perspectives, allowing me to grow not only as a designer, but also a person. I am particularly passionate about creating immersive worlds and experiences, where storytelling and hands-on making converge. I believe storytelling itself is a form of design, pushing me to share and understand what I’ve learned and also navigating my role as a designer amongst it all.
